Kwiat Jabłoni’s performance during Pol’And’Rock 2022 – “filled the whole festival with poetry”

On 4th of August Kwiat Jabłoni took the main stage of the Most Beautiful Festival in the World after a three-year pause caused by the pandemic. “They filled the whole festival with tenderness, wisdom, poetry, and the additional members invited specially for this occasion. A thousand lights illuminated the audience from their phones” – that’s what Jurek Owsiak wrote on his Facebook page. And he was right.

Kwiat Jabłoni – who are they?

Kwiat Jabłoni is a duo created in 2018 by a pair of siblings – Kasia and Jacek Sienkiewicz. They come from a family with musical background, their father, Kuba Sienkiewicz, is a co-founder and a vocalist of Elektryczne Gitary (which the siblings decided to honor through the name of their group – it comes from Elektryczne Gitary’s song called “Kwiat Jabłoni”). In 2016 the siblings participated in a talent show “Must Be The Music. Tylko Muzyka” as part of the group Hollow Quartet. Their first single as Kwiat Jabłoni, “Dziś późno pójdę spać”, gained 3 million views on YouTube in only a few months. “I remember that when the video had almost 20 thousand views, I called Jacek and said that we should post something on Facebook and thank for these views. He told me to wait until we get 25 thousand. We hit that number after one day […]” – Kasia Sienkiewicz in an interview for JazzSoul.pl. Today the video has 39 million views and its recording from Pol’And’Rock Festival 2019 – almost 20 million.

Small Stage, huge audience

In 2019 Kwiat Jabłoni took the small (only by name!) stage of the Most Beautiful Festival in the World. It was the first time I’ve heard of them… I and fell in love.  “Dziś późno pójdę spać”, mentioned above, was almost completely taken over by the audience, which clearly showed how much popularity the group gained in only a year since their debut. Thanks to this performance they won the Złoty Bączek [golden spinning top] award – a prize given by the audience for the best artist of the whole festival; and they won against legends such as Majka Jeżowska and Agnieszka Chylińska. They were given the award in 2020 by Jurek Owsiak during the Most Beautiful House Party in the World (i.e. an online version of the festival)

Kwiat Jabłoni Pol’And’Rock 2022

They performed on the Main Stage of Pol’And’Rock 2022 during the first day of the festival and I could sum it up by saying: “What a concert!”. Since Limp Bizkit’s performance had been cancelled, I believe that Kwiat Jabłoni’s gig was the most anticipated event of this edition. Or perhaps, just like me, they wanted to see them from the beginning. The duo – once again with the audience! – sang their biggest and most important songs, such as “Wzięli zamknęli mi klub” (which has won their fans’ hearts two years before through a special, pandemic home edition), “Mogło być nic”, “Niemożliwe”, “Przezroczysty świat”, “Drogi proste” (their collaboration with Julia Pietrucha), and “Turysta” which is a song of their previous band. They’ve also shared some heartfelt messages about the ongoing war, which they concluded with a cover of T.Love’s “Nie, nie, nie” (which contains lyrics like “Lay your gun on the table and throw prejudice aside”). However, the most beautiful moment of their performance happened during “Buka” when the fans illuminated the area – the recording of that performance was uploaded the following day by KręciołaTV and watched over 80 thousand times. The siblings concluded their gig with “Kwiat Jabłoni” – a song by Elektryczne Gitary, mentioned above.

Let me sum it up like I wanted to: what a concert! They had set the bar very high after their performance in 2019 – and in 2022 soared over it and touched the sky. I know that me saying that might be cliché, but the magic of their concert influences my writing. The duo does a unique kind of music (folk, pop, and indie sometimes mixed with electronic) and although typical for Pol’And’Rock pogo might not happen (I could be wrong! I remember the edition right before the pandemic thanks to the pogo during Majka Jeżowska (!), so nothing can shock me anymore), there was plenty of dancing during their performance. I’m sure that the atmosphere was also influenced by their authentic and clearly visible joy of being able to stand on the Main Stage and sing for thousands of people who know each song by heart (Jacek Sienkiewicz greeted the audience by saying: “Jesus, there’s so many of you!”). And, finally: Kwiat Jabłoni is an extraordinary duo – in our loud world they stand out with their quietness, poetry, softness, and they complete the image with sounds of the piano and mandolin. Pol’And’Rock’s audience is extraordinary as well. Could there ever be a better match?

I cannot wait for Pol’And’Rock 2023!
