Maryla Rodowicz is undoubtedly one of the most well-known and respected Polish singers. Her talent, charisma, and unique style have made her an icon of Polish pop music.

Maryla Rodowicz was born in 1945. Yes, we can hardly believe it too, but Maryla Rodowicz is 77 years old! Her career began in 1962 when she debuted on the professional music scene by performing in the preliminaries of the 1st Young Talents Festival in Szczecin. In the summer of 1966, Maryla Rodowicz joined a student cabaret called Gag. This cabaret was led by composer Jerzy Andrzej Marek and poet Adam Kreczmar. Shortly thereafter, she participated in the Student Song Review in Lublin, where she gained public recognition. In the summer of the same year, she won the main prize at the Song Exchange in Częstochowa for her performance of the song “Jak cię miły zatrzymać” (“How to Keep You, My Dear”). This song was later recorded by Teresa Tutinas.

Maryla Rodowicz – Life and Work

At the end of November 1966, Maryla received the first prize at the 6th Student Song Festival in Kraków for the songs “Jak cię miły zatrzymać” (“How to Keep You, My Dear”) and her original “Pytania” (“Questions”). This was another significant step in her career, which brought her increasing popularity. In early 1970, Maryla Rodowicz released her debut studio album titled “Żyj mój świecie” (“Live My World”), which was a huge success. The album sold over 170,000 copies, earning Maryla a gold record status. That same year, she performed at the 8th National Festival of Polish Song in Opole, where she received an award from Polish Television for her performance of the song “Jadą wozy kolorowe” (“Colorful Wagons Are Coming”). In September, she played her first concerts in Czechoslovakia, initially as a support act for the band The Rebels, and later giving solo performances. She also recorded two singles for the Czechoslovak music market: “Podivín” and “Kolibaj się, kolibaj,” which were Czech versions of The Beatles’ “Let It Be” and “Ballad of the Wagon.” That same year, Maryla also appeared in the musical “Painted on Glass” and at the international song festival in Varadero, Cuba. Her popularity was growing, and her talent was gaining recognition not only in Poland but also abroad. In 1971, Maryla Rodowicz continued her artistic journey. However, just before this performance, the artist experienced a painful breakup with her then-fiancé, which negatively impacted her form.
