How is that possible that the band, originally created as a humorous add on of their previous activities, became project number one and achieved well-deserved popularity all over Poland? This is the story of Nocny Kochanek.
Nocny Kochanek – origin
The particular creativity of Bartosz Walaszek was a reason for many projects. Although Walaszek is not involved in that case, Nocny Kochanek also indirectly owes its genesis to him. The original group of musicians of the band is Night Mistress, whose songs appeared in the animated series “Captain Bomba”, and the full-length film “Zemsta Pharaona” featured a song dedicated to the band. It was in “Captain Bomba” that the English name was translated into the more familiar-sounding Nocny Kochanek. This was also where the brand began to achieve success.
Nowadays it is very well seen that the side project has become the main one, and Night Mistress released its last album in 2014. The light, mocking-like nature of Nocny Kochanek certainly resonates with the band’s fans. The band members themselves also note this on their website, and what’s more, they emphasize that they also feel better with this new formula.
The creativity of Nocny Kochanek
Nocny Kochanek is a project that approaches the topic of music genre with distance. People who are less familiar with their work might even think that it is a parody of metal music. And there is a lot of truth to that. Especially the song “The Heavy Metal Traitor”, from their second album, shows the group’s loose way of thinking about the heavy metal subculture. Therefore if someone tends to take the music topic too seriously, they might want to keep their distance from Nocny Kochanek – just as much as the band maintains this distance from music themselves.
What are the results of this activity? So far, five albums have been released. Three of them have achieved platinum status, and the other two the gold ones, so they will probably fight for platinum. It’s quite impressive for a band that was formed for fun at the beginning, isn’t it? Especially if we take into consideration that many “serious” artists would love to achieve such a success.
What is more, the band has three live albums, including two at Przystanek Woodstock and the Pol’and’Rock Festival. Also worth mentioning is “Tribjut”, which is an adaptation by Nocny Kochanek of “Tribute” by Tenacious D in the Polish language version. A slightly lighter cover is “Krótki lont” – a version of Sabaton’s “Gott mit uns” with completely alternative (and completely unserious) lyrics.
You may or may not like the work of the Night Lover, but it is definitely worth getting to know it to form your own opinion. Even if someone does not like it, a good mood for the rest of the day is guaranteed.
