He began in a crowded apartment in Warsaw’s Wola district, and ended his career as one of the most respected creators of Polish poetic song. For decades, Tadeusz Woźniak created music that went straight to the heart, not seeking applause, but truth in sound.

Tadeusz Woźniak – history

Tadeusz Woźniak was born on March 6, 1947, in Warsaw as the youngest of eleven children in a large working-class family. He was raised in Warsaw’s Wola district, in a small, barely twenty-meter apartment without a bathroom. Woźniak often recalled his youth as difficult in terms of material conditions – many family members lived together in one room, and his parents, already elderly, had financial problems. Despite this, the entire house was filled with love and mutual support. An important moment was the purchase of a radio. At that time, the whole family would resonate with music and share a sense of euphoria. Tadeusz Woźniak himself recalled that the music playing from the receivers at that time awakened his sonic imagination and artistic sensitivity.

The first conscious step towards music was learning to play the violin at a music school. However, he did not like the instrument – the arduous exercises discouraged him from developing his passion, rather than bringing him closer to it.

Woźniak’s interest in a broadly understood artistry began at an early age. In his youth, he began studying at the State Ballet School, which he attended for a few years. It was then that he became involved with theatre, developing his passion for art. He performed, for example, at the Teatr Ziemi Mazowieckiej, where he danced in the ballet Cinderella, and took part in guest performances at the Bolshoi Theatre.

Woźniak showed a great desire to learn to play instruments, and his talent made it easier for him to understand the specifics of a given instrument. He played the guitar and the tambourine. With the latter instrument, he episodically played at the performances of the band Tajfuny.

Soon, another important moment in his musical career came. Fascinated with big beat and the emerging rock scene in Poland, he began seeking a musical company. In 1965, he was invited to work with the Warsaw big beat group Dzikusy. He then adopted the pseudonym Daniel Dan, wanting to give his stage persona more uniqueness. They performed together at the Radio Song Fair, and Woźniak himself received a distinction in the finals of the Spring Teen Music Festival.

He played in clubs with the band Dzikusy, and in 1966 he recorded his first radio recording – Na dobre i złe. Despite these undoubted successes, Woźniak was not yet a full-fledged artist, with the skills for which we value him the most today.

Being hungry for music, Woźniak joined the band Czterech, with whom he recorded songs for Program III of the Polish Radio. This music can be classified as sung poetry, because we could hear his interpretations of works by artists such as Julian Tuwim. With this band, he was placed first at the Television Song Exchange thanks to the song “Hej, Hanno”. In the same year, he represented Poland at the music festival in Sochi, where he won second place in the competition.

The most important moment of his career took place in 1972, when he was 25 years old. That was when he performed at the 10th National Festival of Polish Song in Opole, where he presented his own composition Zegarmistrz światła. His performance was so good that Woźniak won the main prize, thus securing recognition in the music scene. Few people know that it is a poetic song – the lyrics were written by the novice poet Bogdan Chorążuk.

As a result of this huge success, Woźniak established his position on the Polish music scene. In 1972, the same year he won the competition in Opole, he released his debut album, called Tadeusz Woźniak. The album has a character of a ballad, and the lyrics to the songs were written by Bogdan Chorążuk. In the following years, he continued to create music albums. In 1974, he released his solo album Odcień ciszy, and later the following ones: Tak, tak – to ptak (1996), Conieco (1997), Ballady polskie (2001).

Despite the huge commercial success of his music, Woźniak did not turn away from what he truly loved, the theater. He composed music for plays in famous theaters in Gdańsk, Poznań, Opole, and Warsaw. His musical arrangement for Stanisław Wyspiański’s The Wedding, directed by Roman Kordziński, gained particular recognition. However, Woźniak’s activity extended even further – he also composed for films. One of the most recognizable projects of this type was the famous main theme Pośrodku świata, for the popular series Plebania.

In recognition of his artistic achievements, he received numerous awards. In 2005, it was the Bronze Medal for Merit to Culture Gloria Artis, and in 2014, the Golden Cross of Merit. In addition, his work was recognized with the Golden Mask for achievements in the field of theater music and the Beautiful Poland award from the President of the Republic of Poland.

Tadeusz Woźniak remained a symbol of Polish poetic song until his death on July 8, 2024. He dominated public memory primarily as the creator of Zegarmistrz światła, but his life’s work includes several hundred compositions, music for nearly 100 theater performances, animated films, documentaries, and television shows. He will remain an inspiration for both artists and listeners, as someone who constantly developed and shared his sensitivity with subsequent generations.
