It’s time to sing Happy Birthday ! – It’s Pectus’s 20th anniversary. To celebrate, the band has released Barraquito. Let’s review their history and see if the new song is a worthy anniversary single.

Pectus – their story

The band’s 20th anniversary is definitely an incredible milestone and the ability to celebrate it with Pectus is surely great for every music lover. To properly honour this anniversary, it might be a good idea to refresh their story.

The group was established in spring 2005 in Rzeszów by Tomasz Szczepanik who invited his siblings to play with him – Marek (drums), Mateusz (bass guitar), and Maciej (electric guitar). Music has always been a part of their lives. They grew up in a place in which traditional music was sung often and with pride. Folk songs were always present when they were tending to their family’s farm.

Their first attempts at making music had taken place long before they began their career. They recorded a few songs on a boombox, with no microphones and audio engineering. However, they eventually lost the tape with the recordings.

But once they debuted, success came fast. In 2006 they won the Grand Prix prize during the international song festival Carpathia Festival in Rzeszów. In January 2007 Pectus released a mini album featuring 5 original songs recorded with Wojtek Horny and Zbyszek Jakubek. In April of that year they were invited to participate in the 44th National Festival of Polish Song in Opole.

In June they released a music video for To, co chciałbym Ci dać. That song landed them a spot in the 45th Sopot Festival in 2008. In August they won the national semi-final and were able to represent Poland in the international competition. They’ve also won the audience-voted Słowik Publiczności award.

The band quickly started to gain extreme fame, even before releasing a full album. That fact in itself shows how much talend they’ve had from the very beginning.

Their first album was released in 2009 – titled Pectus, it featured 11 original songs. Jeden moment was the most popular one and it was awarded the „Super Hit” title in the TV show Hit Generator. Another song from the album, Życie na dystans, gained them 3rd place in the Premiery competition which was part of the 45th National Festival of Polish Song in Opole. Their debut album placed 5th on the OLiS chart and was certified gold.

During the next years the group continued to grow. There were a few changes of band members and, finally, in 2011 the current formation of 4 Szczepaniak brothers became permanent.

In 2013 Pectus released their biggest hit song – Barcelona. It topped radio music charts and was extremely successful. The song was nominated for many awards and won plenty competitions. At the end of the year it turned out that Barcelona was one of the 10 songs played the most by radio stations in 2013.

During their 20 years as a band Pectus has released 7 albums, accomplished many milestones and become a staple in the history of Polish music. However, they haven’t released any album since 2020, only multiple singles. Their most recent one is Barraquito, released to celebrate the band’s 20th anniversary. Does it portray their beautiful story well?

Pectus – Barraquito

Barraquito was released on 14 March 2025. It’s a pleasant and light summer song. It’s their second song, after Barcelona, inspired by Spanish atmosphere. It can’t be a coincidence that their anniversary song is similar to their biggest hit – Pectus probably wanted to pay homage to the song that had the most impact in their 20-year-long story. Additionally, the vibe of the song brings a certain nostalgia related to the band’s journey, which warms the heart.

The single is really nice – you can feel that Tomasz Szczepanik feels great with Spanish vibes. He lives in Spain and that’s where he took inspiration for Barraquito from. We can also see the country in a great and professional music video, which brilliantly matches the song.

Pectus – 20th anniversary

In an interview for Jedynka Tomasz Szczepanik talked about his childhood and how he and his brothers would watch the festival in Opole in TV, which was still black and white. They used to dream about starting their own band, but never actually thought that their dream would come true. “While celebrating this anniversary we feel extremely happy and grateful thanks to so many fans and listeners” – he stated.

The fans definitely have a reason to be happy – Pectus is going on a tour. There are going to be 20 concerts in total, one for each year of their activity.

Pectus is a group with rich history – full of beautiful moments and successes. It was great to follow them throughout the years and it’s certain that each upcoming year will be a good year if they’re with us.
