In a world where silence was the order of the day, Olga Bończyk discovered that music does not need words to reach the heart. In a home where sounds were not present in a traditional way, it was she who began to create them–first in silence, then loudly, on stage, on the screen, and in the hearts of listeners. This is a story about an artist who was able to draw melody from the unspoken, transforming silence into a powerful sound that moves and stays for a long time.

Olga Bończyk – history

Olga Bończyk was born on January 16, 1968, in Wrocław. Her beginnings with music are unique, which is a result of the home she grew up in. Although Bończyk is currently known for her voice, she grew up in a family where both parents were deaf. Her mother lost her hearing when she was a teenager, and her father was born deaf. Although the Bończyk family home was quiet, her parents did not suppress the music that resounded in Olga’s soul – on the contrary, they supported it.

Young Olga Bończyk attended music school, learning to play the piano. Although her parents could not help her learn to play the instrument, her love of music meant that, despite the difficulties, she did not give up. The support of her mother, who died when the artist was only eighteen, played a huge role here. The singer herself remembers her as follows: “Mom was a buoy that I could always swim to and hold on to. Her approach, tenderness, warmth, and unconditional love gave me strength for life” – a fragment of an interview for the monthly Zwierciadło.

In addition to emotional support, Olga Bończyk also received technical support from her parents. They bought her a piano and many vinyl records, which inspired her greatly. It was thanks to her parents that she met and later learned songs by artists such as Irena Santor and Halina Kunicka, dreaming of performing on stage.

Olga Bończyk herself displayed a great artistic talent – as a seven-year-old, she won the auditions for The Marriage of Figaro at the Wrocław Opera and was part of the ensemble for several years.

Olga Bończyk – music

Olga Bończyk began her artistic career in the Spirituals Singers Band, one of the leading Polish gospel bands. The group performed gospel music a cappella, in multi-voice arrangements. This specific and demanding type of music taught the artist vocal discipline and teamwork. She worked with the band for ten years, which undoubtedly contributed to her outstanding performance during the XXXVI National Festival of Polish Song in Opole. However, ultimately,  she did not win the main prize.

Olga Bończyk’s debut solo album, entitled Kolędy Olgi Bończyk, was released in 2003 and marked an important step in her musical career. The album contains classic Polish Christmas carols in modern arrangements.

Her second album – the first to be widely recognizable and aimed at a wider audience – was called Piosenki z klasą, released in 2005. It contained interpretations of famous film songs and Polish hits, maintained in a jazz climate. The songs included “Paroles, paroles”, “Jego portret”, “Cabaret”, “New York, New York”, and “Gdy mi Ciebie zabraknie”.

Piosenki z klasą was presented at concerts, during which the artist performed songs from the album and other well-known film songs and Polish hits. These concerts were very popular with the audience, and Olga Bończyk emphasized that in this way she was fulfilling her childhood dreams of singing for a wide audience.

The album was positively received by both listeners and critics, which encouraged the artist to continue her musical career and undertake further projects.

In the following years, Olga Bończyk released several more albums, exploring different musical genres. She often combines them subtly and elegantly, reaching for jazz, pop, ballad, and other arrangements.

A special project in her portfolio is the latest album from 2024, called Wracam. The title itself gives away the atmosphere of the album as Olga Bończyk returns to the gospel sounds that she loved in her youth.

Acting career

In addition to her musical career, Olga Bończyk also has a long and rich history in theatre and television. On stage, she has performed in many prestigious theatres, such as the Capitol Theatre in Wrocław, the Comedy Theatre, the Syrena Theatre, and the Kamienica Theatre in Warsaw. The artist demonstrates great versatility, playing both funny and light characters, as well as deeply complex women full of dramatic experiences.

Parallel with her work, Bończyk successfully realized herself on the small screen. She gained nationwide recognition for her role as Dr. Edyta Kuszyńska in the series Na dobre i na złe, where she played a neurologist for several years, winning the sympathy of viewers.

Olga Bończyk also has extensive experience in dubbing, although this part of her career is not as widely known as her theatre or television work. Her characteristic, warm voice and diction make her an excellent actress, lending her voice to characters in animated films, series, and family productions. One of Bończyk’s most recognizable dubbing roles is the character of Gloria, a hippopotamus from the popular animated series Madagascar.

Olga Bończyk’s story testifies to her extraordinary artistic talent. She has achieved success in the fields closest to her – theatre, film, and music. Although raised in a home where silence reigned, music constantly resounded within her. When finally letting it resound on stage, she quickly stole the hearts of the audience.
