Margaret returns with a new album Siniaki i cekiny, which attracts with its lightness and radio sound. Does the return to pop delight as much as her greatest hits? We check whether the new album has met listeners’ expectations and what has delighted them most about it.
Margaret and Siniaki i cekiny –A history
Siniaki i cekiny, released on February 12, 2021, is the fifth solo album by the singer Margaret. Her previous album, created three years earlier, was a solid project that strengthened Gai Hornby’s position in the Polish music market. Maggie Vision took fifth place on the OLiS list at the time. Despite this, it can be seen that the pseudonym Margaret no longer aroused such emotions among the audience as a few years earlier, when songs such as “Byle jak”, “Cool Me Down”, or “Heartbeat” were created. This is probably the normal course of events for a musician who achieves such a huge success in a short time. Many music stars, after creating their greatest hits, are not able to even approach the level they presented during their heyday. Then you can verify whether the artist can find their way in a new reality, in which they must adapt their music to current trends.
In Maggie Vision, Margaret moved away from pop to rap. It turned out rather well and showed that Margaret, even in her new style, could still appeal to listeners.
Siniaki i cekiny faced a similar, perhaps even greater challenge. Did Margaret manage to maintain a high level and reach the listeners’ speakers for longer?
Siniaki i cekiny – An opinion
In Siniaki i cekiny, Margaret returns to the style in which she gained the greatest popularity. The songs on this album are typical radio hits. Naturally, this involves certain advantages and disadvantages.
It is a concept album in which the name itself has meaning. In the lyrics and the sound of the title we can hear the division into “bruises” – reflecting the difficulties and burdens present in the artist’s life, related to the real face of Małgorzata Jamroży, and “sequins” – referring to Margaret’s celebrity life. The singer herself commented on this artistic measure:
This album is like coming home after a great jungle adventure. Bruises and Sequins is a story about duality, both lyrically and musically. “Bruises” are 80s-influenced, pop-synth songs that tell sour stories. “Sequins” are funky, snarky girls’ anthems.
This measure may be interesting, although not necessarily easy to pick out at first listen. It is rather an element that will be appreciated by fans of Margaret who sympathize not only with her music but also with her as a person. For the average listener, this may be an aspect that will not significantly affect the reception of the album. But is that a bad thing?
I definitely like the “lightness” of this album. Siniaki i cekiny is a great album to play in the background. And although the author himself could consider it a criticism, I have the impression that in the case of this work, it is a compliment. Despite being a pop album, the balance between the danceability of the songs, their melodic nature, and well-written lyrics makes the whole thing very accessible. You can listen to it when you feel like dancing, working, or bobbing your head to it, or if you just want to focus on Margaret’s great voice. No song stands out in particular in terms of sound, so Siniaki i cekiny can be listened to in its entirety, feeling a coherent, pleasant atmosphere.
I have to admit, however, that combining English and Polish songs in this case did not quite suit my taste. Margaret does a great job singing in both languages, but in the context of the previously mentioned coherence, this procedure slightly disrupts the impression of uniformity. It can cause slight disorientation during listening, although it does not spoil the final, positive impressions.
Siniaki i cekiny – Music videos
As many as seven music videos were recorded for the album. That’s a lot, although in the case of pop projects, it’s a standard. Each of them is at a high production level. It seems that Margaret chose well, selecting the best songs from the album to record music videos.
All the videos fit the mood of the songs. They complement the listening experience from every angle: dynamics, location, Margaret’s dance, and even her characterization. Modern music is often perceived with eyes, and Gaja Hornby is perfectly aware of this. Fortunately, each video looks great, which would make it difficult to point out the best one.
Margaret – Tańcz głupia
The biggest buzz on the entire album was definitely the song “Tańcz głupia”. Musically, it is one of the best songs on the album, so combined with the interesting music video, “Tańcz głupia” was bound to be a hit. On YouTube, the video for this song has already reached over 18 million views. The song itself was listed number one on the OLiA list, the most frequently played songs on Polish radio stations. Additionally, it achieved double platinum status and was distinguished in the Hot 100 and RMF FM Hit of the Year 2023 competitions.
Margaret – when’s the new album coming?!
Personally, I liked this album. I think it is very pleasant to listen to and can definitely make your time more enjoyable. This pop quality of the album appeals to me, and I treat the whole album as a positive experience, although without any major emotions. However, many of Margaret’s listeners complained that it was still too “light”, and the return to pop meant that although the album is not bad, it did not meet the expectations. If you approach it with a relaxed attitude, it will be a really pleasant journey. However, if we expect this album to change our perception of Margaret’s music, it may indeed be insufficient.
It is interesting to watch Margaret’s growth – the evolution of her music and how she finds her way, trying different sounds. I can’t wait for the new album. This one didn’t surprise me as much as Maggie Vision, but it successfully keeps Margaret’s memory alive.
