To many of us, especially those who were growing up in the 90s, Majka Jeżowska is known primarily as an author of children’s songs. It would be a mistake, however, to reduce her to this one role, which she has proven time and again by appealing also to adult fans.
Majka Jeżowska —Career beginnings
At the age of 18 (in 1978) Jeżowska wins the ZAKR award at the Festiwal Piosenki Radzieckiej (Soviet song festival) in Zielona Góra, and a year later she gets an honourable mention at the National Festival of Polish Song in Opole debuts contest. In 1981 Jeżowska releases her debut album, with such singles promoting it as “Od rana mam dobry humor”. She leaves for the USA the same year and tries her hand at writing in English.
In spite of her relocation, she remains active on the Polish music scene. In 1984 her song “A ja wolęmoją mamę”, based on Agnieszka Osiecka’s text, becomes extremely popular and leads to the release of Jeżowska’s third album. Three years later she performs in Opole once again and receives an award for “Czekamy na wyrok”. Around the same time she appears at Piknik Country in Mrągowo with two songs from films Kingsajz and Deja vu, and in 1993 comes back to Poland for good and appears on the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity stage.
Children’s music
Majka Jeżowska starts making music for children to remedy the poor selection presented to the youngest listeners. She founds her record label JA MAJKA Music that ends up releasing over a dozen children’s albums. In the following years Jeżowska performs thousands of concerts and her children’s songs gain a huge following.
In 2008 Jeżowska hosts the television programme Singa Dinga on TV Puls, and continues to release music albums over the next years, including Bajkowo in 2017 consisting of Disney songs. In 2019 she performs at the Pol’and’Rock festival and receives a particularly warm welcome from an audience of around 150 thousand. The concert later becomes a live album, which two years later is nominated for the Fryderyk award.
It would also be remiss not to mention that Jeżowska’s activity in the music industry and beyond has led to her receiving the Order of the Smile. She is also a UNICEF Goodwill and Polish Youth American Ambassador, and has a seat on the Ronald McDonald House Charities council.
Over the course of her career, Majka Jeżowska has proven to be an artist of many talents, making music both for children and adults. In the latter category, she has performed pop music, as well as country, reggae, dance, and (especially at the Pol’and’Rock festival) rock music.
