Maleńczuk is one of the most vivid artists on the Polish music scene. He is a rock singer and a guitarist, a poet, and can be seen in TV. He has also dubbed films and video games. He used to be called the ‘Bard of Cracow’, what proves his exceptional artistic skills and influence on the city’s culture. Maleńczuk is considered to be one of the most avant-garde and controversial Polish artists.
Childhood and Youth
Maciej Maleńczuk was born on August 14, 1961, in Wojcieszów, Lower Silesian Voivodeship. He struggled at school, repeated a grade and changed schools several times. He did not complete vocational school, then enrolled in a vocational high school, which he did not complete either. At the age of 20, he was sentenced to two years in prison for refusing military service. While in prison, he discovered his passion for music. After his release, he began playing guitar and composing his own songs.
Career Beginnings, Pudelsi and Homo Twist
Initially, he played on the streets of Cracow, Warsaw, Poznań, and other Polish cities. In 1986, he was invited by Andrzej ‘Pudel’ Bieniasz to play with the band Pudelsi. He led the band from 1986 to 2005, with some breaks. They recorded five albums together.
In 1996, he founded the band Homo Twist, which performed rock covers of his solo songs.
Homo Twist has won several Fryderyk Awards – in 1996 (in categories: Band of the Year, Rock Album of the Year, and Alternative Album of the Year) and 2009 (Rock Album of the Year).
Maciej Maleńczuk – Solo Career
His solo career started at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. In 1989, his first two solo albums were released, titled ‘Historia obyczaju’ and ‘Pod papugami’. Maleńczuk is known for publishing his poems as well, and they often serve as lyrics for his songs. His poetry was awarded with the Śląski Wawrzyn Literacki for his poem ‘Chamstwo w państwie’, published in 2003.
