There are many Kazik’s in Poland, but KAZIK is only one, legendary. On the twenty-seventh of April Anno Domini 2022 in Lódź club Wytwórnia for the fourth time I could sit in the audience and feel small in the face of KAZIK and the rest of Kult members. However, before I start to dwell on this event, I should start with the fact that this report has no other purpose than to encourage those who do not know Kult and do not attend their concerts to change their attitude immediately. Those who do listen, attend concerts, do not have to read it, as they surely love Kult as much as I do and will surely support my words of praise for Kult. Coming back – so how was it on the concert of Kult Akustik 2022 tour in Łódź? It was energetic, emotional and…cozy. Curious? I’ll tell you more.
The concert was called Akustik, which means that all songs were rearranged from typical rock-punk sounds to those directed at instruments “not plugged in”, “not electric”, as I called it in my absolutely layman musical term (unplugged). So you could hear keyboards, drums, rattles and of course guitars. Of course, the standard Cult sound with the characteristic saxophone remained, but that powerful impetus which always accompanies the “plugged in” concerts of the band was clearly toned down in favor of a stronger emphasis on the lyrics. The occasion was good, especially that the concert was dedicated to fighting Ukraine.
The concert began with the song with the title very close to all people from Łódź, which is “Ziemia obiecana” coming from the latest “Ostatnia płyta” of the band. Further repertoire revolved around widely understood metaphysics in the form of songs like “Piotr pielgrzym”, “Czterech jeźdźców” or “Wiary”. However, there was no lack of the greatest hits of Kult and you could tear your throat out singing about a house divided by a wall from “Arahja”, Spanish adventures from ” Madryt” or about a certain “Celina”. There was also an opportunity to sing about Mickiewicz in “Baranek” or Gałczyński in “Wróci wiosna baronowo”. I don’t think I have to explain here that the loudest, most powerful and with the involvement of absolutely every fan present in the audience at that moment sounded the link song, the cohesion song – the song “Polska”.
In between the tracks Kazik was regaling us with numerous anecdotes and comments referring to his performances. However he was not completely alone at the microphone, because he invited to Łódź three guests who were very important for him, for Kult and for us fans. These were Kazik’s son Janusz Staszewski, Krzysztof Radzimski known as Doktor Yry and Mirosław Jędras, also known as Zacier. Each of the guests had their individual “five minutes” on stage and a duet with the leader of Kult. The biggest surprise of these guest appearances was the fact that the song “Krew boga” – one of the most powerful hits of the band was performed not by Kazik, but Doctor Yry (allegedly after long-lasting begging). Apart from that, the guests sang such songs as “Natalia w Brooklynie” or “To zima”. Of course, those who know the personas of Doctor Yry and Zacier know that in their case it was not without eccentric costumes and grotesque arrangement of presented songs.
Well, I think I proved that it was emotional, energetic and funny, but what about the cosiness? Well, the thing about Kult concerts is that they gather a great community of fans among whom even such a shy person as me goes crazy like nowhere else. No matter how many times I go to Kult’s concerts I am always happy to see a room full of people wearing T-shirts from various tours. It’s great when chairs set up in the hall become unnecessary as everyone is already celebrating the concert in front of the stage. It is also wonderful that Kazik himself, who is never a star, never creates himself as nobody knows who, makes his concerts so homely and easy-going, even though the status of Polish music icon which Kazik and Kult boast about still remains a fact and a kind of sacrum for us fans. He is himself, he is Kazik “who roams the streets”, he is both a musical god and a pal for us, without an inflated ego, without glitter and fanfare.
