Krzesimir Dębski is a name that is well known among film music lovers. He is the author of many well-known musical themes that everyone is able to immerse themselves in. His musical compositions continue to delight audiences both young and old.

Krzesimir Dębski – Biography

He was born on 26 October 1953 in Wałbrzych. He has Polish-Ukrainian roots and his father is a pianist. He is a composer, arranger and music producer, as well as a conductor and jazz violinist. He is also active as a professor at the I. J. Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań.

Krzesimir Dębski has won many awards, both domestic and foreign. He won, among others, the first prize at the World Jazz Competition in Hoeilaart (1983), as well as in the Composition Competition on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Festival of Polish Modern Music “Poznań Musical Spring” (1986). In 1985 he was recognized by the American magazine “Down Beat” as one of the top 10 jazz violinists in the world. He was a member of the Presidium of the Polish Composers’ Union (1995-1999) and was vice president of the Polish Modern Music Society. Krzesimir Dębski is also a knight of the Ecce Homo order (2010), he also received the medal “Meritorious for Culture Gloria Artis” (2015) and the medal “pro Patria” (2017).

He is the author of more than 30 records with compositions for recognized record companies, he has also composed more than 50 symphonic and chamber pieces. He was associated with the Poznań Madrigalists, as well as with the cabaret Tey. He played, composed and made arrangements for the Polish Radio Orchestra in Poznań. He is the father of four children, of whom his son, Radzimir Dębski (Jimek) is also a recognized Polish and world composer.

The Magic of the Screen Enchanted in Notes

What is undoubtedly Krzesimir Dębski’s domain is film and series music. He has created music for more than 50 narrative films and documentaries! He also has over 40 theatrical compositions to his credit.

One of his best known works is the music for With Fire and Sword directed by Jerzy Hoffman, which undoubtedly falls into memory and builds the atmosphere of an unusual story being an adaptation of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s novel. He also composed the famous Dumka na Dwa Serca performed by Edyta Górniak and Mietek Szcześniak, which was a song promoting the film. It is a romantic song that cannot be forgotten as it is a beautiful prelude to the story of Skrzetuski, Helena and Bohun. Another interesting composition is Pieśń Heleny for choir and symphony orchestra, which is essentially an instrumental version of Dumka…, in which you can feel the delicacy and emotionality of Sienkiewicz’s heroine. Olga Pasiecznik’s voice is magnetic and very romantic, dotting the i’s of this wonderful composition. Among the symphonic parts, Bitwa for choir and symphony orchestra is definitely worth mentioning. At first, it lends an atmosphere of unease and tension, only to shift into a tone that fits perfectly with the battle scenes.

Krzesimir Dębski received the 1999 Fryderyk Award in the Composer of the Year category for his music to With Fire and Sword, as well as the Philip Award in 2000. Other notable film scores include the music to An Ancient Tale and In Desert and Wilderness, which also set the tone and atmosphere for the story, and which have also been praised by critics and listeners alike.

Krzesimir Dębski is also a composer of music for television series. He is responsible for the musical themes from Klan, Na dobre i na złe, and Ranczo. These compositions are well known and somehow even cult among Polish viewers. Today’s thirty-year-olds may also remember his compositions for Polish youth series. Anyone who remembers Maszyna Zmian, Tajemnica Sagala, Gwiezdny Pirat or Magiczne Drzewo will certainly recall the extraordinary soundtrack accompanying the adventures of the young protagonists. It is definitely a magical journey into nostalgia, which does not leave the listener indifferent. It is worth mentioning that Krzesimir Dębski received an Emmy nomination in 1998 for his music to Maszyna Zmian, which is definitely a great honor in this field.

Krzesimir Dębski – What You Didn’t Know About Him!

In his creative work Krzesimir Dębski puts classical music on a pedestal. It is to classical music that he devotes most of his time. Although he is a versatile artist, he is most pleased with the fact that his works, in addition to festivals, are also played at philharmonic concerts. He is the author of over 120 symphonic and chamber works, including symphonies, operas, oratorios and religious compositions. He has also composed 11 instrumental concertos. He is also a laureate of many composition contests.

Krzesimir Dębski’s compositions have been performed at the most prestigious festivals such as the Luzern Festival and Piano Spheres in Los Angeles. His works have also been performed at festivals in Malmo, Brussels, Pasadena, Mexico and India. Among the musicians who have performed works by Krzesimir Dębski, it is worth mentioning Vadim Riepin, José Cura, Andrzej Dobber, Susan Svrček, Daniel Stabrawa and Gilad Atzmon, as well as musicians from the Berlin Philharmonic, the Solvguttene Chor from Oslo and Konstanty Andrzej Kulka. Among his works it is important to point out, among others, vocal-instrumental compositions to the works of the most outstanding contemporary poets, such as Biografioły created to the poetry of Stanisław Barańczak for 6 male voices, 7 Pieśni created to the poetry of Wisława Szymborska for soprano, tenor, female choir and symphony orchestra or Psalm nr 1 created to the poetry of Czesław Miłosz for choir and symphony orchestra.

Krzesimir Dębski is certainly one of the brightest stars of Polish music. He is an outstanding composer, whose artistry has been appreciated by Polish and foreign listeners. He is a versatile artist, who is able to find himself in various musical genres, and who has a particular fondness for classical music. Among his compositions everyone will find something to suit their taste and will surely be enchanted, for Krzesimir Dębski has mastered to perfection the ability to enchant the audience.
