Kayah has remained one of the most important artists on the Polish music scene for decades, and her Christmas projects always evoke strong emotions. The December season is a perfect moment to once again take a closer look at how the singer combines tradition with modernity—both on her albums and in her latest recordings. Will Kayah’s proposals this year once again transform the Christmas mood of listeners?
Kayah – background
Katarzyna Magdalena Rooijens (née Szczot), known professionally as Kayah, was born on November 5, 1967, in Warsaw, and spent most of her childhood in Białystok. She began her musical career back in the 1980s, performing with reggae groups Rastar and Zgoda, as well as with the rock band Tilt. Her first major success came in 1988, when she appeared at the National Festival of Polish Song in Opole. Her song Córeczko was so well received that she earned a distinction, and the track quickly gained popularity.
In 1995, her first solo album Kamień was released. The record turned out to be a significant success—praised by both critics and audiences. However, it was only the beginning, as her greatest achievements were still ahead. Just four years later, her most popular album to date saw the light of day: Kayah i Bregović, recorded in collaboration with Goran Bregović. It featured hits such as Prawy do lewego and Śpij, kochanie, śpij.
In the following years, Kayah experimented with various musical genres, releasing albums such as JakaJaKayah and Stereo typ. These projects have gone down in the history of Polish music as highly recognizable and well-regarded artistic undertakings.
Over the years, Kayah gained immense popularity, becoming one of the most iconic Polish vocalists. She has been nominated for awards over one hundred times and has won nearly fifty statuettes—eight of them being Fryderyk Awards.
Kayah has released 13 studio albums. Today, we will focus on two of them. Since it is December and Christmas is just around the corner, it is the perfect time to revisit Kolędy śpiewa Kayah and Gdy pada śnieg. But are they really good musical choices for the holiday season?
Kolędy śpiewa Kayah
Kolędy śpiewa Kayah is her first Christmas album. At the same time, it is not a typical collection of traditional carols. While listening to it, we are unlikely to feel snowflakes falling or the cozy family atmosphere of baking gingerbread. These are not classic interpretations, such as those by Ryszard Rynkowski—rather, they are experimental takes on well-known songs.
Kayah – Przybieżeli do Betlejem
Kayah chose to blend classic motifs with more contemporary elements, drawing from soul, folk, and pop. As a result, the carols sound different—very fresh. The album was released in 2006, so the artistic courage she showed at the time is truly impressive. It seems that the experiment paid off. Although I personally am usually not a fan of such reinterpretations of carols, in this case they turned out surprisingly well. The tracks maintain an intimate atmosphere, which makes the stylistic shifts feel natural rather than caricatured—more like a successful play with form.
If this year we are looking for something new so that Christmas does not pass exactly like every other year, turning on this album might be a refreshing change. Kayah is a top-class singer, and even if someone does not enjoy such reinterpretations, her skills deserve at least a moment of attention and appreciation.

Gdy pada śnieg
Kayah’s fans had to wait a long time for another Christmas release. It took ten years before the snow “fell” again and the singer told its story in her own way. Thus, in 2016, Kayah released her second Christmas album, Gdy pada śnieg, created in collaboration with Jan Smoczyński.
The 2016 album approaches carols in a similar way, placing their lyrics within soul, jazz, and occasionally slightly folk-inspired music. The foundation remains the same, yet the two albums clearly differ. Gdy pada śnieg is even more intimate, with a more atmospheric sound. While Kolędy śpiewa Kayah featured moments of artistic improvisation, here everything feels carefully thought out and refined with great attention to detail.
Kayah – W żłobie leży
The arrangements make use of piano or keyboard (often played by Jan Smoczyński), guitar, and a subtle rhythm section that gives the tracks a swinging or ballad-like character. However, the album does not sacrifice the warmth of Christmas for the elegance of jazz—Kayah’s voice remains warm and inviting. The image of listening to this album while sitting in a rocking chair by the fireplace and drinking tea with honey, apple, and cinnamon feels genuinely pleasant.
Gdy pada śnieg also works well as background music at the Christmas Eve table, mainly thanks to its excellent musical setting. It is simply a good album—though, like the previous one, it is best suited for listeners who are looking for something new or who simply love jazz.

Kayah – Tylko się nie roztop
On November 28, 2025, Kayah released a single titled Tylko się nie roztop. It is a genuinely pleasant Christmas song. The track features a humorous storyline about inviting a snowman standing outside the house to the Christmas Eve table. The titular words “just don’t melt” are addressed to him—after all, the snowman could soak the table where freshly baked gingerbread is laid out.
The song was presented in a atmospheric music video. It is well-produced and visually appealing, though at times heavily commercial due to the noticeable presence of advertising, which slightly diminishes the sense of Christmas innocence.
Kayah – Tylko się nie roztop
The song was released at the end of 2025. The year 2026 is just around the corner—exactly ten years after the premiere of Gdy pada śnieg. Interestingly, the gap between that album and her previous Christmas release was also ten years. Could this single be a preview of another Christmas album by Kayah? Hopefully—because in Tylko się nie roztop, the singer proves that she still has “that something.”
