Andrzej Dąbrowski is a figure whose contribution to Polish jazz music is unquestionable. His extraordinary skills as a drummer, composer, and vocalist earned him recognition not only on the Polish scene but also internationally. Active across several artistic fields, his musical legacy is one of the most important in the history of Polish jazz.

Andrzej Dąbrowski was born on April 13, 1938 (85 years old) in Vilnius. His passion for music began during his high school years, when he joined Wojciech Karolak’s jazz trio. This period proved to be a pivotal moment in the life of the young artist, who would later secure a permanent place in the history of Polish jazz. In 1958, Andrzej Dąbrowski made his debut as a drummer in Andrzej Kurylewicz’s trio during the Jazz Zaduszki festival. That same year, he performed with this ensemble at the 1st International Jazz Festival Jazz Jamboree ’58 in Warsaw. This event opened the door to many remarkable collaborations and milestones in his career.

 

A jazzman on the Polish and international stage

Andrzej Dąbrowski was associated with numerous bands and artists on the Polish jazz scene. He played as a drummer with ensembles led by Andrzej Kurylewicz (1958–1961), Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski (1961–1966), as well as with Krzysztof Komeda, Jerzy Milian, Włodzimierz Nahorny, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Krzysztof Sadowski, Andrzej Trzaskowski, and Michał Urbaniak. His versatility and musical skills attracted many other artists to collaborate with him. Among them were such renowned names as Josephine Baker, Stan Getz, Don Ellis, Art Farmer, Johnny Griffin, Jon Hendricks, Rolf Kühn, Bud Powell, Lucky Thompson, and Bernt Rosengren.

Andrzej Dąbrowski also worked with prestigious orchestras and ensembles. He was associated with the Kraków Philharmonic and the Polish Radio Orchestra. His long-standing involvement in chamber music was reflected in his collaboration with the ensemble Musica Antiqua et Nova.

He performed at the Jazz Camping Kalatówki festival in many editions, including in 1959, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2006, and 2009. In addition, he took part in renowned festivals such as the Sopot Jazz Festival in 2007 and the Bielska Zadymka Jazzowa in 2008.

Andrzej Dąbrowski – the singer

The artistic versatility of Andrzej Dąbrowski knew no bounds. While he was recognized as an outstanding drummer and jazz musician, he also made a lasting impression as a captivating vocalist. His vocal journey began in 1965 as a jazz singer and later evolved to include pop music in 1970. His ability to move seamlessly between genres demonstrated his deep understanding of music as a universal language.

His artistry extended beyond solo work. Together with other artists, he created fascinating duets in which vocal chemistry produced magical musical moments. His duet partners included outstanding performers such as:

Journalist, rally driver, and photographer

He was not only a talented musician, but also a gifted columnist and journalist. He collaborated with renowned magazines, writing illustrated reportages using his own photographs, concert reviews, and articles for jazz and popular music publications.

Andrzej Dąbrowski was also passionate about motorsports. He served as an editor for the monthly magazine “Gentleman” and collaborated with the weekly “Motor,” where he wrote about caravanning, tested cars, and addressed road safety issues. His automotive journalism earned recognition and was awarded the Golden Steering Wheel (Złote Koło Kierownicy).

He first competed in the Polish Championships in 1957, where he won the vice-champion title. He participated in the Polish Rally four times, joined the FSO Rally Team in 1975, and became a multiple-time Polish Journalists’ Champion. Over more than fifty years of participation in races and rallies of various ranks, he stood on the podium an impressive 63 times.

For five years, Andrzej Dąbrowski collaborated with Program III of Polish Radio, hosting the popular music shows “Trzy kwadranse jazzu” (“Three Quarters of an Hour of Jazz”) and “Z wokalistyką na Ty.” He also occasionally appeared on television, presenting his new musical projects. In 2010, he recorded a new version of the song “Do zakochania jeden krok” together with Ędward Ącki for the program “Szymon Majewski Show.”

While traveling across Poland and the world, he was also active as a photographer. In recent years, he participated in international photography salons in cities such as Zagreb, Mumbai, London, and Rzeszów.
