Alicja Majewska (born May 30, 1948) is a Polish singer known to almost anyone with even a slight interest in Polish popular music. She debuted in 1968 at the Soviet Song Festival in Zielona Góra. Her songs, performed solo and in duets with stars such as Andrzej Zaucha, Zbigniew Wodecki, Dorota Osińska, and Grzegorz Markowski, have become legendary. Majewska’s artistic achievements are so significant and valuable that in 2005 she was awarded the Bronze Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis. Alicja Majewska is an undisputed diva of Polish music, listened to by generations.
Alicja Majewska – Youth and Career Beginnings
The singer was born in Wrocław but grew up in Olbierzowice near Sandomierz. Her mother was a Polish teacher, and her father was the principal of the local school and a singing teacher. It was from her father that Majewska inherited the “musical gene,” and it was thanks to him that she took lessons from the organist, which instilled in her a love for singing. After finishing high school in Pruszków, she studied andragogy at the Faculty of Psychology and Pedagogy at the University of Warsaw. In 1973, she defended her master’s thesis and obtained a master’s degree. The singer chose not to work in her field of study, dedicating her life to her artistic career.
During her studies, Alicja Majewska joined the band Partita. During this time, she also performed at the Teatr na Targówku in Warsaw. She took singing lessons from Professor Olga Łady. In the 1970s, to become a professional singer, one had to pass an exam before a special committee. Alicja Majewska passed this exam in 1972, and her career took off. In 1974, she began performing the repertoire of Hanka Ordonówna in the TV program “Miłość ci wszystko wybaczy” (Love Will Forgive You Everything). Her talent was spotted by Mariusz Walter, who proposed collaboration with Studio 2.
Festivals and Awards
The year 1975 brought success with the Main Prize at the 13th National Festival of Polish Song in Opole, where Alicja Majewska performed the song “Bywają takie dni” (There Are Such Days). In 1980, Majewska achieved another success. The song “Jeszcze się tam żagiel bieli” (The Sail is Still White There) won the second prize at the 18th National Festival of Polish Song in Opole and the Grand Prix at the International Festival in Rostock. In 1985, she won the Grand Prix in Havana. The artist repeatedly received awards at the National Festival of Polish Song in Opole in 1980, 1985, 1986, and 1987. She also received a special award in 1989 and was recognized as an artistic individuality. In 2015, she received the Honorary Golden Microphone and celebrated 40 years of artistic work.
The artist has performed in many countries in Europe, Asia, and Polish communities in Canada, the United States, and Australia. She has launched many hits, including “Jeszcze się tam żagiel bieli,” “Odkryjemy miłość nieznaną,” “Być kobietą,” and “To nie sztuka wybudować nowy dom.” For over 45 years, Włodzimierz Korcz has been the composer of her songs. The singer calls him her musical husband. In 2020, the concert “Majewska & Korcz – Round 45” was held to celebrate 45 years of her artistic collaboration with this composer. In late March 2022, Alicja Majewska received the SuperWiktor award for her entire professional career. In the same year, the album “Piosenki Korcza i Andrusa” (Songs of Korcz and Andrus) was released. Since 2019, Alicja Majewska has been a coach on the popular music show “The Voice Senior.” In 2023, she received the Amber Nightingale statue at the Sopot Festival.

Alicja Majewska has made many archival recordings for Polish Radio and recording companies. Her career also includes collaborations with other artists, such as Andrzej Zaucha, Zbigniew Wodecki, Jerzy Połomski, Dorota Osińska, Grzegorz Markowski, and Ryszard Rynkowski. The singer has also released albums with Christmas carols – the first with Łucja Prus and Jerzy Połomski, then “Kolędy w Teatrze Stu” (Carols at the Stu Theater) with Halina Frąckowiak and Andrzej Zaucha, and the third with the Strzyżów Chamber Choir. Additionally, she performed sacred songs and participated in oratorios by Włodzimierz Korcz and Ernest Bryll. One of her favorite performers is Wojciech Młynarski. Since 2019, Alicja Majewska has been a coach on the popular music show “The Voice Senior.”
