A classical musical education, a rap background, a turn to soul, and ambitious collaborative projects – Lilu’s path was not obvious or one-dimensional. For many years, Aleksandra Agaciak changed her sound and environment while building her career on solid foundations and artistic decisions that not always fit into the traditional forms of the Polish music scene.
Lilu – history
Lilu, or simply Aleksandra Agaciak, was born on December 26, 1981, in Łódź. Her musical journey began early – she learned music from a young age. She was already playing the flute at the age of six, and later she graduated from the State Primary Music School in Łódź in the violin class. From the beginning, her musical journey led her towards a professional career. She had solid foundations – both theoretical and practical.
For many years, Agaciak was also a member of the Krajki Artistic Scout Ensemble. With the band, she won many awards at national and international festivals. Both the music school and her experience in Krajki were incredibly important steps in her development. They gave her the knowledge, the experience, and the confidence that turned out to be so important in her adult life.
Aleksandra Agaciak began her adulthood with further artistic education. She studied singing at the Jazz and Popular Music Department of the Academy of Music in Katowice. She also completed acting studies at the Higher School of Humanities and Economics in Łódź, as well as Spanish philology with American studies at the University of Łódź.
Therefore, she gained vast knowledge not only in music but also in the broadly understood arts and humanities, which, in the profession of a musician, is of great significance. Her education brought results, even though success wasn’t immediate. She began her work in 1997 as a sixteen-year-old. She got her first taste of rap and hip-hop in collectives and smaller projects under many names, before adopting the name “Lilu” and starting her solo career.
Lilu – music
She began her music career in 2005. She appeared as a guest vocalist on various releases, like “Czarny Piątek” alongside Łona and “Muzyka Miejska” among others.
Lilu & Łona – Mów do mnie
She put out her first album in 2008. The record titled LA was released on September 19, 2008, by MaxFloRec. It featured 16 songs and many famous artists took part in the recordings, like Rahim and Łona. Collaborating with admired artists at the start of her career strengthened her position and showcased Lilu’s potential to achieve an important place in the Polish music scene.
LA, as could be expected from her previous collaborations, remained in the hip-hop genre. While working on the second album, however, Aleksandra Agaciak surprised her listeners and turned in a completely different direction. On December 2, 2011, she released C/A, which marked a clear separation from the style she was known for. The project was in the soul and R&B style, which showcased her vocal versatility and musical maturity.
After these experiences and successes, Agaciak continued her artistic path, joining ambitious music projects. She performed in the band Morowe Panny, and later in Panny Wyklęte, with whom she recorded multiple albums. These projects had a historical-political character and they significantly widened the spectrum of her artistic activity.
Lilu & Cheeba – Kocham Kocham Kocham
The experiences taken from working on C/A also had an impact on her choral successes. In 2012, after joining the Jazz Choir, she won first place in the category “Gospel and pop music” at the XVI Cantio Lodziensis Choir Festival in Łódź and another first place in the “gospel/spiritual” category at the international choir festival Seghizzi International Choral Singing Competition in Italy.
Lilu’s Biggest Hits
Lilu’s last solo record, titled Outro, was released in 2015. Already as a concept, it was meant to be an ending to her rap and solo career. The album’s style referred back to her debut LA – it brought back the rap atmosphere and the distinct collaborations. The record featured Zeus, Fokus, and Ten Typ Mes, among others.
- Kocham Kocham Kocham (z Cheeba)
- Spacer (z Kleszcz & Dino)
- Coś Dobrego, Coś Złego (z Okoliczny Element, Reno)
- Mama mówiła
- Kobiety (z Reno)
- Pod paznokciem (z Straho)
Lilu’s legacy is a specific catalog of albums and songs that are still appreciated by listeners today. That is a sufficient summary of the career of the artist who did what was authentic to her – in different versions, yet always deliberately and successfully.
