The artistic work of Arkadiusz Jakubik is well known to any fan of Polish cinema. An outstanding actor, he has amazed audiences for many years with his talent in numerous films and TV series. Currently, he is a muse of director Wojciech Smarzowski, delivering moving performances in films like Clergy (Kler) and Traffic Department (Drogówka). Jakubik is also a skilled voice actor, having participated in the radio play The Long Earth based on the novel by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter for Czwórka Radio. However, few people know about his musical career. Dr Misio, the band for which Jakubik is the leader and vocalist, has been active on the music scene since 2008!
Dr Misio – Not Young, But Angry
On March 26, 2013 – exactly 10 years ago – Dr Misio released their debut album Młodzi (The Young). The album was promoted with a music video for the title track, directed by Wojciech Smarzowski. The same album also features the band’s biggest hit, Menthol Cigarettes (Mentolowe papierosy). The video premiered in March and was directed by Bartosz Piotrowski, with appearances by actresses Katarzyna Zielińska, Katarzyna Wzorek, and Paula Urbanek. For their debut, Dr Misio received the Journalists’ Award at the Sopot TOPtrendy Festival in 2013.
Too Old for Pogo?
After a successful debut, Dr Misio didn’t slow down – just a year later, on July 31, 2014, they released their second album titled Pogo. The lyrics for many songs are written by Krzysztof Varga and Marcin Świetlicki. A notable track is “Ona wie” (“She Knows”), a musical arrangement of a poem by Cyprian Kamil Norwid. The band’s third studio album, We Will Rise (Zmartwychwstaniemy), was released on May 12, 2017. On this album, Jakubik and the band don’t compromise – through bold and somewhat controversial lyrics, they openly express what hurts and moves them. For this album, Dr Misio was nominated for the 2017 Fryderyk Award for Best Rock Album. The band’s fourth album, The Fear of the 21st Century (Strach XXI wieku), was released during the unusual times of the COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed its premiere to October 9, 2020. This album focuses on the phobias and fears that affect all of us, which became even more tangible during the “time of the plague.”
The Stage Bear
Dr Misio is a regular at music festivals. Their first major festival appearance was at the legendary Jarocin Festival in 2013. They are often stars at the Pol’and’Rock Festival, performing in 2014, 2017, and 2020. In 2021, they also appeared at the CieszFanów Festival. To this day, the band remains active in concert performances. Their specialty is rock music.
What is Dr Misio like in concert? Above all, charismatic – Arkadiusz Jakubik proves that he feels just as comfortable with a microphone as he does in front of the camera or on the theater stage. He skillfully engages with the audience, drawing them into either fun or reflection, depending on the tone of the song. During concerts, the band demonstrates that no one is too old for pogo – this is the core idea behind the group, one that resonates with many listeners. Dr Misio’s live performances are a truly incredible experience, and attending one of their concerts is a must at least once.
