Huge emotions, tears and unceasing applause – this is how the concert of Krzesimir Dębski in Białystok looked like. With his music, the well-known composer touched the hearts of the listeners who gathered for a truly noble cause.

In the Concert Hall of the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic at 2 Podleśna Street a charity concert “A Heart-to-Heart with Ukraine” took place. The performance was given by the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, conducted by renowned composer and conductor Krzesimir Dębski, and soprano Milena Lange. Our portal had the pleasure to cover the concert with media patronage. Before and after the concert you could meet members of the Proanima.pl editorial team with cans – together we collected almost 17 thousand PLN! All proceeds from ticket sales and fundraising will go to help victims of the war in Ukraine.

A Heart-to-Heart with Ukraine” concert is an extraordinary event full of emotion and delight. Krzesimir Dębski, who comes from a family of refugees, approached the performance in a very individual and emotional way. The compositions that were performed during the concert are not random – it is the composer’s unique and personal choice. Dębski mentioned that a large part of his film works are compositions for war films – and he began his concert with a war theme.

The opening composition was Melodia, composed by Miroslav Skoryk, which is the leitmotif of the 1982 war drama Vysoky pereval. When the first bars rang out, the entire hall was immediately enchanted by the orchestra. The ensemble and the conductor acted as one organism; perfect synchronization and extraordinary musical sensitivity made it possible to capture the essence of this composition. The next theme was a multi-part mass composed by Krzesimir Dębski, Missa Brevi, which was an opportunity for the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic Choir to present themselves. The singers were equal to the task – their performance hit the spot and did not leave the listener indifferent. Both performances were excellent introductions to the composer’s other unfussy works.

With Fire, Sword and… Music

Psalm Number One is an interesting musical interpretation of Czesław Miłosz’s work. Thanks to the Philharmonic’s wonderful acoustics, the concert made a positive impression, especially since it was the first time the composition had been played live. After the Psalm… The Battle began and not just any battle, as it was a monumental arrangement of the music motif from With Fire and Sword. In this arrangement, Krzesimir Dębski showed how much music affects him and with what commitment he is able to direct the orchestra. He literally felt the atmosphere of The Battle, which was perfectly picked up by the orchestra, doing their best. After the excitement of The Battle, it was time for calm in the form of the romantic Helen’s Song performed by soprano Milena Lange. This performance grabbed the audience’s heart, causing delight and emotion. With her voice, the singer perfectly conveyed the longing and feelings of the heroine of With Fire and Sword.

Intercultural Encounters

Another theme was Siberian Song, a composition created for the 2013 film Syberiada Polska. This is an extremely atmospheric song that was presented really amazingly live. A musical attraction was certainly Ave Maria, a composition created in the Sorbian language. Krzesimir Dębski mentioned that his intention was to perpetuate the Sorbian culture, which originated from a Slavic ethnic group that now inhabits German territory. In this song we could also hear the wonderful voice of Milena Lange, who brilliantly performed the vocal parts. The evening culminated with the Polonaise in d minor, which is a “non-Polonaise”. The song was the icing on the cake and perfectly summed up the entire concert. The audience were so delighted that they rewarded the composer and the performers with a long standing ovation.

The concert “A Heart-to-Heart with Ukraine” was an extraordinary event whose noble idea united two nations: Polish and Ukrainian. Krzesimir Dębski’s music consistently moves the heart and speaks to the soul, and experiencing it live is definitely an unforgettable experience.
